Welcome! My name is Madeline Gould, and my journey into the world of sustainable agriculture started back in 2009 when I landed my first job on a farm near my childhood home. At just 13 years old, I discovered my passion for farming and set my sights on operating my own farm someday.
Throughout my teenage years, I eagerly returned to the farm every season, honing my skills and deepening my love for the land. When the time came for me to pursue higher education, I enrolled at Sterling College in Craftsbury Common, VT. Those years were pivotal for me as I furthered my passion for sustainable agriculture and broadened my skillset.
At Sterling College, I pursued a degree in Agroanthropology, an interdisciplinary field that explores the complex relationship between human societies and agricultural practices, examining the cultural, social, economic, and environmental aspects of farming and food production. Agroanthropology provides a holistic perspective on agriculture, recognizing that it is not solely a technical or economic activity but a deeply rooted cultural practice that shapes human societies and the environment. Additionally, I also took a keen interest in Draft Horse Management, recognizing the value of working with these magnificent creatures in a system that aims to minimize soil degradation and fossil fuel consumption.
In 2016, armed with my degree and a burning desire to put my knowledge into action, I made the decision to move to Madeline Island, a charming Wisconsin community embraced by the waters of Lake Superior. There, I wasted no time producing food, beginning with a garden and venturing into the production of maple syrup the very next spring.
Over the course of six years on Madeline Island, I diligently cultivated a garden of diverse perennials, finding my greatest joy in growing garlic. Year after year, I carefully selected the finest seed garlic and replanted it, actively breeding for qualities such as cold hardiness, disease resistance, and the production of beautiful, large bulbs and cloves.
In 2022, a dream that had been brewing for years finally became a reality—I launched my own farm business. I planted a large field of garlic at my sister Whitney’s farm, Clover Leaf Elk Farm, located in Montello, WI. After years of sharing my harvest exclusively with friends and family, I am thrilled to extend my offerings to the wider public, providing both seed and culinary garlic of the highest quality.
Following this exciting milestone, I embarked on a new chapter in my farming journey. In August 2022, I relocated to Poplar, WI to raise pigs on leased land. In December 2023, I closed on my dream farm in Brule, WI. The generous pasture space available here has allowed me to venture into the production of pastured pork. I firmly believe in giving animals the freedom to roam and express their natural behaviors, and my herd of hogs enjoys abundant space and fresh grass around the clock. In return, the clay soil in this area benefits from their presence, becoming enriched and prepared for cover cropping.
My commitment to sustainable agriculture and dedication to quality farming practices are at the core of everything I do. I strive to cultivate food that nourishes both the body and the soul, honoring the land and its intricate ecosystems. Join me on this journey as I continue to expand my offerings, sharing the fruits of my labor with individuals who appreciate the value of sustainable, locally grown food.
Thank you for visiting, and I look forward to being a part of your culinary and agricultural adventures.
